Durham University is a collegiate institute – every student belongs to a college, which provides somewhere to live in the first year of study, and, depending upon the college, during other years too. There are a total of 16 colleges affiliated with the university, and they are split between 2 locations – Durham (14 colleges) and Stockton (the Queen’s Campus, with 2 colleges).

Most colleges have their own amenities, with some having gyms, tennis courts and (of course) bars for their members, and there is much good natured rivalry between the colleges (including some trophying), especially between the ‘hill’ and ‘bailey’ colleges on the Durham city campus. Many of the colleges have their own rowing and sports teams who compete both against other Durham University colleges and on a national level.
