The Top Ten Best Things About Going To University In Durham | durhamStudent™

Durham University crest, © durhamStudent durhamStudent may be a little biased, but Durham is the best place to go to university in the UK, and here are 10 reasons to prove it! Ever the procrastinator, durhamStudent hasn't ordered them, so they're in no particular order...

1. Durham's Collegiate System

The university colleges system - great for making life-long friends during freshers' week! The friendly nature of the rivalry also adds to the college system - for example, durham21 reports Grey JCR elected someone from St Aidan's before realising the student was not from their college!

2. Klute

Klute: love it or loathe it, Durham just wouldn't be Durham without it! Sure, it may be Europe's 'worst nightclub' or something, but that's part of Durham nightlife's 'quirky' nature. And there's always Newcastle nearby...

3. Durham Is Tiny

Collingwood College crest. Durham is so small your friends are never far away, which means that 'quick drink in Varsity' often turns in to a night out with the entirety of Collingwood women's rugby club and twenty English students from Castle: spotaneous nights out are part of university's charm!

4. Durham Cathedral

Durham Cathedral, viewed from, Aidan's college Durham Cathedral - for such a small city, Durham boasts an impressive cathedral, and durhamStudent finds it strangely comforting to see on return to Durham.

5. Resentment Towards Oxbridge

There's 'Doxbridge', but there's something about Durham students generally disliking - or even hating - their Oxbridge counterparts, as this Facebook group demonstrates that durhamStudent finds quite amusing..jealousy? Good-natured ribbing? Oxbridge rejects tarnishing Durham's reputation? Who knows?

6. The Swan & Three, The Colpitts

Cheap pubs provide havens for students, and The Swan & Three Cygnets and The Colpitts fit their role perfectly: cheap and student-friendly!

7. Grey Fireworks

It may only happen once a year, but the annual fireworks held by Grey excel most public firework displays for miles around.

8. Student Newspapers

What with the Palatinate, Mostly Harmless and The Sanctuary, there's always something to read in the Riverside Café - at the very least, they're useful for Durham students living out who need more toilet roll!

9. Rahs

A bit like Marmite and Klute - you either love them or hate them - rahs are a part of Durham life. If you're one of them, they're your friends; if you despise them, they still provide plenty of entertainment in Loveshack teetering around on their heels or strutting around in a shirt with their collars pulled high.

10. The Weather

OK, this may be a lie...but it does get warm in Durham occasionally.
