Collingwood College

Durham University’s Collingwood College, known affectionately as ‘The Wood’ to its members, was the first purpose-built mixed-sex college in Durham, and now has around 1200 members, with approximately 550 of these living within the college building. A hill college, Collingwood was founded in 1972 and is situated near Grey College. Collingwood is the second largest college in Durham after St Hild & St Bede.

Collingwood is renowned for the excellent academic record of students, and maintains a fierce but (usually) friendly rivalry with Grey College, its down-hill neighbour. As the second largest college of the university, Collingwood has quite an expansive college bar, known affectionately by members of the college as ‘The Redwood Arms’.

Alumni of Collingwood College include David Kershaw, the CEO of M & C Saatchi, the global advertising agency.

The motto of Collingwood College is aime le meilleur – ‘love the best’.
