With winter truly set in it’s important to throw ourselves into the season rather than hopelessly reminiscing about enjoying a drink in a pub beer garden with glorious sunshine. So here are a few things going on in Durham this winter that you can enjoy!
Durham Christmas Light Switch On
Durham city Christmas light switch on is always somewhat of an event, usually turned on by a local celebrity to the cheers of the locals. But this year I hear the lights will be turned on by father christmas himself! The switch on takes places at the market place of the 11th of November 2015.
Lumiere festival takes places every year and is one of North East’s most important & popular events. Durham city becomes a wonderland with many light features to amaze on cold winter nights. The festival takes place between 12th – 15th November 2015, due to popularity tickets can sell out fast so make sure to book early to avoid disappointment.
Durham City’s Traditional Christmas Festival
Durham city’s traditional christmas festival takes place every December and is based around the Cathedral and Castle, as well as various other places in the city centre. With over 190 stalls in the marque you can get everything you could possible ever want for christmas, as well as locally sourced festive foods and drinks. The festival takes place between Friday 4 December – Sunday 6 December 2015.
Attending a festive service at Durham Cathedral is a one of a kind festive experience, with beautiful surroundings and traditional carols sung by the choir. There are a few services on and around Christmas, make sure to check out their calendar to see what’s on offer.
(Festive tip, make sure to pop into the Bishop Langley pub for a warm mulled cider on a cold winters day, it’s a festive favourite of mine)
